Prescription Renewals
Pharmacists in Nova Scotia can assess, renew, and review your prescriptions to ensure safe and effective care. They may conduct health assessments, adjust treatment if needed, and share records with your primary care provider.
- Do you have refills left on your prescription?
- Call your pharmacy to have them fill the prescription for you.
- No refills left on your prescription?
- Pharmacists can assess and prescribe renewals of your medication for up to 12 months if it’s safe and appropriate. The assessment will include a discussion, and may include tests such as a blood pressure check, or review of lab results. If needed, your pharmacist may adjust your treatment or refer you to another provider.
- Your care will be documented, and a follow-up plan discussed. A record of the prescription will be sent to your primary care provider.
Note:
- Pharmacists assess all services before prescribing, testing, or administering medication. Some patients may be referred elsewhere.
- Renewals for narcotics and controlled substances may be limited and are based on assessment.
- When doing a renewal assessment, the pharmacist will assess if it is working as intended. If not, the pharmacist can prescribe a change including adapting the dose/directions, substituting for another medication or even creating a tapering plan to safely stop the medication.
There is no fee for this service with your valid Nova Scotia Health Card at Nova Scotia pharmacies and pharmacy clinics.
