Contraception and Sexual Health

Birth Control

Pharmacists can assess and prescribe for hormonal birth control as well as emergency birth control.  Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) such as levonorgestrel can be used for up to 72 hours, while ulipristal can be used for up to 120 hours after unprotected sex.

Abortion Care

The Rose Clinic can support patients with options for medical or surgical abortions.  Patients can call 1 833 352 0719 (hours Monday-Friday 8:00am-3:00pm) or fill out  self referral form.

If after discussion with your provider or the Rose Clinic, it is decided to proceed with medical abortion, pharmacists can dispense the medication Mifegymiso® with full coverage for residents of Nova Scotia with a valid health card

HIV Pre Exposure Prevention

HIV PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis/Prevention) is used to reduce the risk of contracting HIV-1 infection in high risk individuals. Eligible patients will receive this service at no cost with a valid Nova Scotia health card at participating pharmacies.

Eligibility Assessment

Pharmacist will determine if patient is eligible for HIV PrEP by clarifying expectations regarding adherence, potential adverse reactions and drug interactions, and ongoing monitoring.

Initial Prescription & Follow Up

The initial prescribing appointment occurs after laboratory results have been reviewed to confirm patient’s eligibility for PrEP. At this visit, the pharmacist will issue the first supply of PrEP ( a daily oral medication) and establishes appropriate follow up dates and monitoring intervals with the patient.
